Terminology Courses

Welcome to Termologic’s online courses in terminology management. Our courses are unique. Other courses in terminology management — and there are not many — are theoretical, academic, and some contain content that has not changed in decades. Some are even taught by people who have never actually managed terminology. Our courses are designed and monitored by Kara Warburton, a leading “real” terminologist. She actually manages terminology… in the past and still today, for many companies and organizations. She also wrote the book, The Corporate Terminologist, which is the only book ever published that addresses the practical aspects of managing terminology in the “real” world. Finally, Kara holds a PhD in Terminology Management and has led the development of international terminology standards. But its her years of experience that count most here. You will not find a course as useful and informative about terminology management anywhere else.

Kara’s courses are designed for current and aspiring terminologists. But even if you do not expect to have that official job title, if you are involved, or want to be involved, in any aspect of language management and quality control, these courses will be useful. Are you a translator? A tech writer? Interested in SEO? Involved in marketing and branding? Do you want to find better ways to manage your organization’s content? These courses are for you.

The courses are offered in three groups, moving from fundamental concepts to tools and finally the all-important data itself: terms. It is highly recommended to complete the groups in the sequence indicated.

Upon successful completion of each group of courses, you’ll receive a certificate of completion for that group.

Course Group 1. Getting Started as a Terminologist

This first group comprises two courses: Foundations, and Skills and Techniques. Here, you’ll learn about the fundamental concepts, principles, methods, skills, techniques, and tools needed to confidently perform the job of a terminologist. At the end of each course, you’ll complete a quiz to test your knowledge.

Course Group 2. Working with Termbases

The second group comprises five courses and focusses on working with termbases. Kara will show you step-by-step how to create and manage a termbase including all its various features (filters, views, workflows, permissions, export, import, backups, and more). Only the first course, which covers fundamental concepts about termbases, ends with a quiz for you to test your knowledge. The remaining four courses are more task oriented so there are no quizzes.

Course Group 3. Working with Terms

The third group comprises three courses. Here, you will learn a very essential skill for terminologists: how to find, extract, and prepare terms for a termbase. You’ll learn how to build a corpus and use concordancing software and term extraction tools. You will also learn how to “clean” a list of terms and prepare it for import into a termbase. This course group is purely task-oriented and therefore there are no quizzes.
