Learn how to manage terminology — now micro-content — from the expert

Welcome to Termologic’s online courses about managing terminology and other forms of “micro-content.” Our approach is unique. Other courses in terminology management — and there are not many — are theoretical, outdated, and, to be honest, not very practical. Some are even taught by people who have never actually managed terminology. In our courses, you will learn from Kara Warburton, a practicing terminologist with decades of experience (see her list of clients). It was Kara who coined the term micro-content to refer to a new paradigm that unleashes huge potential in content management and multilingual communication. She wrote The Corporate Terminologist — the only book ever published that addresses the practical aspects of managing terminology and other forms of micro-content in commercial settings. Kara holds a PhD in Terminology Management and has led the development of international language standards. But its her years of experience that count most here. You will not find a course as useful and informative in this field anywhere else.

If you are involved, or want to be involved, in any aspect of language management, these courses will be useful. Are you a translator? A tech writer? Interested in SEO? Involved in global marketing and branding? Do you want to find better ways to manage your organization’s content? These courses are for you.

The courses are offered in three series, moving from fundamental concepts to tools and finally the all-important data itself: terms and other forms of micro-content. Each series contains a number of courses, each of which is comprised of lessons which are in turn divided into topics. In total, there are 10 courses, 34 lessons, and 47 topics. We recommend that you complete the series in the sequence below. At the end of each one, you’ll receive a certificate of completion.

Series 1. Getting Started as a Terminologist

This series comprises two courses: Foundations, and Skills and Techniques, for a total of ten lessons. Here, you’ll learn the fundamental concepts, principles, methods, skills, techniques, and tools needed to manage terminology and other forms of micro-content effectively. At the end of each course, you’ll complete a quiz to test your knowledge.

Series 2. Working with Termbases

The second series, which focusses on working with termbases, comprises 16 lessons organized in five courses. The first course, which describes how to design a termbase, ends with a quiz for you to test your knowledge. Through videos, Kara will then show you how to create and manage a termbase including all its various features (filters, views, workflows, permissions, export, import, backups, and more).

Series 3. Working with Terms

The third series comprises eight lessons in three courses, most of which are videos. Here, you will learn a very essential skill: how to find, extract, and prepare terms and other forms of micro-content for a termbase. You’ll learn how to build a corpus and use concordancing software and term extraction tools. You will also learn how to reduce a list of extracted language units to the most important ones, and import them into a termbase. At the end of this series there is a quiz to test your knowledge.
