Our courses

Learn how to manage terminology — or rather “microcontent” — from the expert. Our courses are unique because they are rooted in practice. Other courses about terminology management — and there are not many — are more theoretical, may be outdated, and, to be honest, are sometimes impractical. Some are even taught by people who have never actually managed terminology in a real production setting. In our courses, you will learn from Kara Warburton, a practicing terminologist with decades of experience (see her list of clients).

It was Kara who coined the term microcontent to refer to a new paradigm that unleashes interesting potential for content management and multilingual communication. She wrote The Corporate Terminologist — the only book that addresses the practical aspects of managing terminology and other forms of microcontent in demanding production settings such as that found in global companies and international organizations. In addition to her practical experience, Kara holds an MA and a PhD in Terminology Management, develops international language standards at ISO, presents at conferences, delivers professional workshops, and teaches university courses in terminology and related subjects. But it’s her years of experience that count most here. You will not find another course that is as useful as this one.

Terms and other forms of linguistic microcontent are used in various technical applications — a growing field referred to as Natural Language Processing. Our courses will benefit anyone who works with language in any capacity. Are you a translator? A tech writer? Interested in SEO? Involved in global marketing and branding? Want to find better ways to manage your organization’s language assets? Want to learn the basic concepts behind taxonomies and ontologies? Most importantly, do you want to acquire knowledge and skills that are highly sought-after for the growing range of technologies that use language? If you would answer yes to questions like these — our courses are for you.

The courses are offered in three series, moving from fundamental concepts to tools and finally the all-important data itself: terms and other forms of microcontent. Each series contains a number of courses, each of which is comprised of lessons and topics. We recommend that you complete the series in the sequence below. At the end of each series, you’ll receive a certificate of completion.

You can complete each series at your own pace. You can stop and log off at any time or at any point, your work will be automatically saved and you’ll be returned to where you left off when you log back in.

Series 1. Getting Started as a Terminologist

This series comprises two courses: Foundations, and Skills and Techniques, for a total of ten lessons. Here, you’ll learn the fundamental concepts, principles, methods, skills, techniques, and tools needed to manage terminology and other forms of microcontent effectively. At the end of each course, you’ll complete a quiz to test your knowledge.

Because it covers fundamental concepts, there is more reading in this series compared to the others, which feature more videos.

Series 2. Working with Termbases

The second series, which focusses on working with termbases, includes five courses with a total of 16 lessons. The first course, which describes how to design a termbase, ends with a quiz for you to test your knowledge. Through videos, Kara will then show you how to create and manage a termbase including all its various features (filters, views, workflows, permissions, export, import, backups, and more).

Series 3. Working with Terms

The third series comprises eight lessons in three courses, most of which are videos. Here, you will learn a very essential skill: how to find, extract, and prepare terms and other forms of microcontent for a termbase. You’ll learn how to build a corpus and use concordancing software and term extraction tools. You will also learn how to reduce a list of extracted language units to the most important ones, and import them into a termbase. At the end of this series there is a quiz to test your knowledge.
